The Return of the Alt-comic Floppy

Retrofit Comics aims to publish 17 32-page floppy-style comics by 17 of the best comic artists in the business. Why 17 artists? Originally it was going to be one year’s worth of comics, but too many amazing artists wanted in. Far be it from me to deny these artists their right to work!

Saturday morning cartoons: “Black Sunrise” by Nick Cross

Or, it’s a preview of Black Sunrise, a full length animated film that he’s doing by himself. He’s funding the project via IndieGoGo, so if you’re feeling generous, maybe you could toss some pennies his way to make this thing a reality.

A.K.A is an adrenalin-fueled, action packed, “grindhouse” inspired 4 issue crime comic that explores what happens when you double-cross the wrong man. Brought together by the writer/artist team of Steven Walters, and Rob Reilly, A.K.A is the story of Guy Doyle, a ruthless bodyguard of one of the most notorious crime bosses in New York. When he gets the order to kill Adrian Truelove, a famous gang leader who fathers a child with the mob bosses daughter, a hunt for Truelove ensues and a story that’ll leave you wanting more with each tension filled issue begins.

The book is also supplemented by 4 page, faux upcoming books by some of today’s hottest creators like: Mike Oeming, Joe Kelly, Bryan J.L Glass, Neil Vokes, and John Broglia

Welcome to disruption. 26-year old Amanda Hocking is the best-selling “indie” writer on the Kindle store, meaning she doesn’t have a publishing deal, Novelr says.

And she shouldn’t. She gets to keep 70% of her book sales — and she sells around 100,000 copies per month. By comparison, it’s usually thought that it takes a few tens of thousands of copies sold in the first week to be a New York Times bestselling writer.

Good move, I fully support this idea!

Who would like to join the cause? We’re not against mainstream comics. Hell, we love ‘em! We just think there’s room to try something new, something different, something creator-owned!
