At this year’s New York City Fringe Festival, nineteen year old writer/director, Colleen Scriven will be presenting a creative reimagining of Moliere’s classic as part of the Fringe AL FRESCO series, the free outdoor theatre arm of Fringe. The dialogue remains from the original, but that’s about it. This bold rethinking will place the well known characters into modern day Brooklyn, representing all of the different types of people from the borough, from uptight Park Slopers to Williamsburg hipsters.
Joining Scriven in this endeavor is the cast including Louis Lourens Buitendagas Orgon, the Park Slope yuppie father in the midst of a midlife crisis who is seduced by the too-cool ways of Tartuffe (Stephen Sherwood). Orgon’s family who see through Tartuffe’s thrift store and vinyl exterior will include his children Mariane (@Lianne Lianne Frankel) and Damis (Luke Wise), as well as his new wife (Nastasha Strang). Lorenzo Landini will play Cleante, the voice of reason, Christopher Chwee will play the tough Valere, Mariane’s boyfriend, and JOhn OHara will play the roles of M. Loyal and The Exempt, and Jen Flanagan will take on the legendarily sassy role of Dorine.
Tartuffe will be performed August 19th and 20th at 6 pm, again on the 24th at 2 pm, and finally on the 25th at noon. All performances will be held in the First Street Green Art Space.
