ABRAMS BOOKS NEW BLOG:
Featuring Laura Lee Gulledge’s
PAGE BY PAIGEWelcome to the new ABRAMS Blog! We’re thrilled to embark on this terrifically exciting endeavor. We hope that this can serve as a forum for the diverse range of ideas and expertise that make ABRAMS such a unique place to work. You’ll see a week and a half of posts before this, so we encourage you to read through all of last week’s content as well.
This new journey for the ABRAMS family has been somewhat of a personal one for me, as well. It’s been more than a year now since I moved to New York City and started working here. In the course of my year and five months here, I’ve gone from the New York outsider to one of the millions of people who hold a special place in their heart for this city: new friends from all over the country (and the world) have become lifelong ones; walking for miles across bridges and through boroughs feels like a cakewalk; and working in a dream job no longer seems impossible or undeserved. These have all been part of my NYC awakening, so to speak (not to mention the never-ending electricity of the city that never sleeps).
And as we launch on our blog on this day, my personal journey of falling in love with New York reminds me of Page by Paige, a new graphic novel from our young adult imprint, Amulet Books. It tells the story of a teenage girl who’s just moved to New York City with her family and struggles to find her place in the big, bad city. She misses her friends and life back in Virginia immensely. Her only outlet becomes her sketchbook, where she draws her thoughts and expresses what she cannot express in words. But, as the story progresses, Page Turner (her parents are writers, obviously!) discovers a love for the city, an exciting new pool of friends and a boy that makes her feel on top of the world. Through her sketchbook, Page learns to be at peace in her physical space and call New York City home.

HAPPY EASTER from Paige Turner & the Agents of Whimsy!!
In my graphic novel “Page by Paige” the characters (Together known as the Agents of Whimsy) fill plastic Easter eggs with surprises and leave them around for people to discover.
I thought it would be fun to try this here in New York! So I stuffed over 400 eggs. Half to hide, half to give away at my upcoming book events.
This weekend I hid about 200 eggs just in time for Easter, with my lovely assistants Diana, Daniel, and Anton. (Real life Agents of Whimsy!) The eggs ended up in Bushwick, Williamsburg, Park Slope, SOHO, Chelsea, the Meatpacking District, and a mixture of subway stations such as Rockefeller Center & Bedford/Nostrand. All over the place!
Here’s my first piece of FAN ART…about Doctor Who!
In anticipation of the new season of Doctor Who, I wondered…what would the recent companions do if they all got together? Girl’s night out!Doing caricatures is NOT my strength, so this was definitely a fun challenge for me. I hope you enjoy it!
Check out Laura Lee Gulledge’s first graphic novel, PAGE BY PAIGE which will be released on May 1st (if you missed the first sneak preview signing release this past weekend at MoCCA).
Tomorrow I’ll be promoting “Page by Paige” at Kids Comic Con!
Saturday April 15th. (Costs $5, but under 18 free)
I’ll be at the Abrams table 12-5:00.(And doing a short workshop sometime in there…)
At Bronx Community College: Colston Hall, 181st Street & University (4 Train to 181st Street)
And if you can’t make it be sure to pre-order Page by Paige from Abrams!
My first wheat paste!
It’s been a while since I did any street art under my old alias Karat, but I’m about to hang a bunch of brass etchings and more wheat pastes. (The glue I made for this first one didn’t take to the wall, so I’ll be redoing it as well)
It reads: “I do see you love adore cherish I’m sorry the fears sometimes interfere Remember our hears unwavering I trust you to see me too.”
